Wilhelmsen's contract was selected Tuesday by the Diamondbacks, indicating that he has won a spot on the team's Opening Day roster.
EDGE Analysis
Wilhelmsen earned his place in the Diamondbacks bullpen through his excellent work in spring training, during which he limited opposing batters to a .103 average over 9.1 innings. It wasn't all gravy for the hard-throwing right-hander, however, as Wilhelmsen conceded five walks. Nonetheless, in a bullpen lacking high-impact arms, Wilhelmsen could have an opportunity to carve out a meaningful role if he's able to reign in his control, which he struggled to do in 2016. Over 46.1 innings between the Mariners and Rangers, Wilhelmsen submitted a 6.80 ERA and 3.7 BB/9 rate over 46.1 innings.
