Whitley (elbow) has progressed to throwing off the top of a mound in his rehab, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The 26-year-old right-hander joined fellow May 2015 Tommy John surgery recoveree Alex Cobb in taking the next step in the rehab process on Tuesday. Whitley could be ready for a return to game action by mid-season, assuming his rehab continues setback-free. He amassed a 5-5 record and 5.02 ERA with the Yankees in 2014-2015, and was claimed off waivers by the Rays back on Nov. 20.
