Volstad signed a minor league contract with the Pirates, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports. The former first-round pick (16th overall in 2005) did not pitch in the majors last season for the first time since 2008, and instead spent the year posting dismal numbers in Japan and Triple-A. He may be afforded a chance to compete for roster spot in spring training, but Volstad owns a 4.94 ERA and 1.45 WHIP for his career and would need a lot to go his way to break camp with the big club.
