Vargas was optioned to Triple-A Rochester after Sunday's game against the Rays, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. The decision to send down Vargas was partially motivated by the Twins playing their next series in Pittsburgh, where no DH is available, but the 24-year-old's struggles probably bear the brunt of the blame for the demotion. Though his production has rebounded a bit in May, Vargas still owns a sub-.300 on-base percentage and has struck out in 26.8 percent of his plate appearances. The Twins will have him work on improving his pitch recognition in the minors before considering bringing him back with the big club.
