Vargas gave up four runs on six hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 5.1 innings Tuesday against the Tigers. He took the loss for the third time in his last four starts, but this was the first time he failed to make it out of the sixth inning over that stretch. Barring a wild collapse, Vargas should finish the year with an ERA under 3.50 and a WHIP under 1.30, which is about as good as anyone who drafted him at the start of the season could have hoped for. He'll never be a major strikeout threat, but guys who can approach 200 innings with a sub-3.50 ERA don't grow on trees. His next outing is Sunday against the Red Sox.
