Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the Pirates have requested the medicals of free agent left-hander Johan Santana. The two sides are expected to meet on Wednesday at the Winter Meetings. Santana has also been drawing attention from the Mets, Yankees, Twins, Rays, Orioles, Royals and Brewers. The veteran starter underwent shoulder surgery in April, missed all of the 2013 season, and he will be 35 years old when the 2014 campaign begins. However he's an obvious high-reward candidate for a lot of teams seeking rotation depth.
