Smith gave the Diamondbacks bulk relief following Luke Weaver's short outing. He's on the outside looking in at Arizona's rotation after splitting time between starting and relieving in 2021 but is being stretched out in case a need arises early in the regular season. With Zac Gallen (shoulder) expected to miss the start of the season and presumptive fifth starter Zach Davies still ramping up, per Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, there could be a need for a couple starter arms the first week or two in April.
