Thornburg allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits, a walk and a hit batsman while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning in Wednesday's game against the Orioles.
EDGE Analysis
Thornburg's appeared in two games this spring and has yet to finish an inning he's started, permitting nine runs on seven hits and two walks over 1.1 innings. "His arm is late. The delivery is not in sync. You see a number of pitches up," manager John Farrell told Tim Britton of the Providence Journal. "This is a guy that's had a lot of recent success, but we've got to sharpen some things up." Thornburg has a history of bad springs, but Farrell wants to be proactive and figure out how to fix Thornburg's shaky command, rather than accept that bad springs are a natural course of events for the right-hander.
