The Red Sox optioned Kelly to Triple-A Pawtucket following Wednesday's game, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Kelly was tagged for seven earned runs in just 2.1 innings in Wednesday's loss to the Orioles and now owns an 8.46 ERA on the season, so the team decided to take advantage of a remaining option and give him some time in the minors to iron things out. The Red Sox will not necessarily need a fifth starter for the considerable future thanks to off days in their schedule, so it remains to be seen who will take Kelly's spot in the rotation. Reliever Noe Ramirez will take Kelly's place on the roster for the time being.
