The Orioles are discussing whether to move Jimenez out of the starting rotation and into the bullpen, Eduardo Encina of The Baltimore Sun reports.
EDGE Analysis
Jimenez is in the final year -- earning $13.5 million -- of a four-year, $50 million contract. It's become obvious that the marriage won't last past this season, but the Orioles would be on the hook for $8 million by releasing Jimenez now. The right-hander's 7.17 ERA through nine games (eight starts) is second-worst in MLB behind San Diego's Jared Weaver. When asked whether the team would move the veteran to the bullpen like it did last year, manager Buck Showalter said, "There's always that possibility." The O's are in a tough spot, but it's clear that Jimenez is a major liability that hurts the team's chances of winning when he's on the hill. Limiting his innings by moving him to the bullpen could be the only solution until he shows improvement.
