The Blue Jays announced that Sanchez's early departure from Sunday's start against the Rays was due to a split nail on his right middle finger, John Lott of The Athletic Toronto reports.
EDGE Analysis
As suspected, Sanchez, who was making his return from the disabled list Sunday, incurred a setback with the same finger that had previously sidelined him. He tossed just 13 pitches in one inning before departing, yielding no runs on one walk while striking out a batter. Sanchez underwent a procedure to remove about a quarter of the fingernail while he was sidelined, but it appears there was still enough nail left on the digit to provide additional complications. The Blue Jays will likely reassess his status in the coming days before determining whether or not he'll be able to make his next scheduled turn Saturday, which will also come against the Rays.
