St. Louis Cardinals starting pitching Adam Wainwright will begin playing catch from 120 feet this week as he continues to recover from an Achilles injury, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Wainwright, who had previously been throwing from 90 feet, will take another incremental step in his recovery from his April surgery. If his current timetable holds, he should be on track to resume mound work in early September, potentially putting him on tap for a late-season return. Because Wainwright would require extensive time to build up his arm strength to where he could throw at least 100 pitches in a start, the team seems more likely to bring him back in a relief role. Though he has not pitched out of the bullpen in quite some time, it is not unfamiliar territory for Wainwright, who was the team's closer during their 2006 World Series run.
