Smith went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in the Mariners' 2-1 win over the Red Sox on Friday. Clay Buchholz was nearly un-hittable Friday, but Smith got to him in the sixth to tie the game at 1-1. Smith has secured a role as the leadoff hitter against righties and has done well enough to keep that role even when Austin Jackson returns from the DL.
