Smith is likely to remain a part of the starting rotation for the balance of the regular season in the wake of Paul Blackburn's season-ending wrist injury, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 36-year-old right-hander is coming off a forgettable month of August (0-3 record, 8.49 ERA over five starts), but Blackburn's injury will apparently afford him an opportunity to make up for it in the final month of the season. A career minor-leaguer, Smith hadn't started a game at the big-league level until doing so on July 8. He's often appeared overmatched after tossing a trio of quality starts to open his current stint with the A's.
