A sore groin kept Smith out of the last week of spring training action, but his absence was mostly just precautionary as the Mariners looked to have him healthy for the start of the regular season. Smith will play the larger half of a platoon in right field this season, but with lefty Cole Hamels toeing the rubber for the Rangers on Opening Day, Smith will assume a reserve role for the day while Franklin Gutierrez gets the starting nod.
