Shaw has been named the Red Sox starting third baseman for Opening Day, MLB.com's Ian Browne reports.
EDGE Analysis
Shaw was able to surpass the highly-paid Pablo Sandoval on the depth chart after a strong spring in which he went 19-for-57 at the plate with two home runs and an .886 OPS. His bat wasn't the primary reason for the promotion, however, as defense appeared to be the deciding factor in this case. What started out as a motivational tactic for Sandoval has now come to fruition, making Shaw a strong early-season target on the waiver wire.
