Shaw feels his slump is not anything mechanical and that he needs to improve his approach at the plate, the Providence Journal reports. Shaw, who went 1-for-2 with a walk in Tuesday's loss to Baltimore, entered the game with just one hit in his previous 22 at-bats.

After Shaw had four productive months at the major-league level, opposing pitchers have developed a plan against him. In the recent series against Minnesota, it was backdoor breaking balls early in the count and elevated fastballs late that had Shaw chasing. "Mechanically, I don't think anything is wrong. It's more approach-based and what I'm looking for at the plate more than anything else," said Shaw. "It just happens to be that they're executing [the attack plan], they're ahead of you, and when you're not feeling good and down 0-2, that's not a good combination."
