Mejia was optioned to the Royals' alternate training site Thursday, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.

As someone capable of playing almost any position on the field but incapable of doing much damage at the plate, Mejia was a luxury option on the 30-man roster. However, with Thursday being the deadline to cut down to 28 men, he was a natural option to be demoted. He is 0-for-8 with five strikeouts this season.
