Schierholtz has been placed on release waivers, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports. The Cubs booted Schierholtz from their 40-man roster last week after he hit just .192/.240/.300 in 99 games with the club this season. Schierholtz will become a free agent by Friday, and despite his struggles this season, he did smack 21 homers last year and may draw interest from around the league as a bench bat.
