Ryan was released by the Cubs on Wednesday, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.

Ryan's stint with the Cubs was brief given that he joined the club via trade on Dec. 8. He was a late addition to the trade that sent Starlin Castro to the Yankees; however, after the Cubs signed pitcher Edgar Olmos on Wednesday, they needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. Ryan will hit free agency and could sign with a team looking to shore up its middle infield.
