Ryan (back) has been taking swings but is still "a ways away" according to manager Joe Girardi, Newsday reports. After the initial projection that he'd miss just five days, it's possible Ryan will be out close to the entire spring as he deals with a mid-back strain. If he is forced to miss the majority of spring training, the lost playing time could cost him the opportunity to earn a platoon with either Didi Gregorius or Stephen Drew at shortstop or second base.
