Rutledge (knee) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, Jason Mastrodonato of The Boston Herald reports.

Scheduled starter Roenis Elias has been recalled to start Friday and he'll take Rutledge's spot on the active roster as Rutledge recovers from a bout with left knee patellar tendinitis. Rutledge had an uneven role with the Red Sox prior to being placed on the DL on Friday, primarily entering games off the bench as a defensive replacement. The Red Sox will have less defensive versatility at their disposal while Rutledge is on the shelf.
