Royals designated RHP Chris Volstad for assignment. Volstad was claimed off waivers from the Cubs in late-October, but he wasn't really needed after the Royals acquired Ervin Santana and re-signed Jeremy Guthrie. The 26-year-old right-hander had a terrible 6.31 ERA in 21 starts this season while making $2.65 millon, so he isn't worth the raise he figured to make in arbitration, but he shouldn't have trouble attracting interest as a free agent.
