Royals and C Brett Hayes avoided arbitration Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $600,000 contract. With Brayan Pena out of the picture, Hayes looks likely to open the 2013 season as the primary backup to starting catcher Salvador Perez. Hayes, 28, batted .202/.229/.254 in 39 games this past season for the Marlins.
