Reds manager Dusty Baker said Wednesday that the club considered keeping Tony Cingrani as a reliever, but decided that it's not the best move for his development.
Cingrani allowed two runs in seven innings Tuesday in a win over the Cubs, but he's expected to head back to the minors now that Johnny Cueto (shoulder) is slated to return from the DL. While the young left-hander could be an option for the bullpen later in the season, he'll continue to start every fifth day in the minors for now.
He would be an awesome set-up man behind Chapman. Imagine seeing 98-mph fastballs in the 8th inning, then Chapman brings it at 100+ in the 9th..talk about a closing tandem.
But I still think Cingrani belongs on the big team as a starter.
Wish the Reds would just trade him if they won't start him in the rotation.
as a red's fan i don't see them trading him at all, that's not how the reds roll......it's going to be tough for him to crack back into the starting lineup unless someone gets hurt or they need a 6th starter for some reason down the road......personally i would like to see him take arroyos spot, but thats probably not going to happen until maybe next year
Arrouo's or Leake's spot would be justifiable IMO, but as long as those players' contracts are so big, the Reds are doing so well, and that crazy Dusty Baker's insistence on nursing Cingrani to death in the minors continues to rule, I will be disappointed. Young arms everywhere are getting their shots these days. Tony is one of, if not, the best.
