Reds exercised James Shields' $7.5 million option for 2012. An easy call, even for the traditionally cost-conscious Rays. Shields, who turns 30 in December, went 16-12 with a 2.82 ERA and 226/62 K/BB ratio over 249 1/3 innings this season. His contract includes club options for 2013 ($9 million) and 2014 ($12 million), which could be enticing for other clubs should the Rays decide to shop him this winter.
