Red Sox manager John Farrell said Wednesday that Rutledge (hamstring) will "require some time" off to recover and would likely open the season the 10-day DL, Tim Britton of the Providence Journalreports.
EDGE Analysis
Rutledge strained his left hamstring in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game, and while the extent of his setback isn't known, Farrell's comments suggests it's more than a day-to-day situation. The 27-year-old was expected to fill a utility role in the infield for the Red Sox, with perhaps his greatest importance early in the season coming as a platoon partner at first base with Mitch Moreland, as Hanley Ramirez has been unable to play the position this spring due to a sore shoulder. Farrell suggested that Steve Selsky and Marco Hernandez would be the top candidates to take Rutledge's spot on the roster, with Selsky perhaps having the edge to his previous experience playing first base.
