Rays designated RHP J.D. Martin for assignment. The move was done to clear a spot on the 40-man roster, presumably for Jesse Crain who is expected to be activated on Monday. There's a strong chance that the 30-year-old will clear waivers and continue to serve as organizational depth in the minor leagues.
