Kelley signed a contract valued at $3 million with the White Sox on Saturday, Scot Gregor of the Daily Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
Kelley was projected as a first-day draft selection but fell to the White Sox at 47th overall. Teams shied away from the right-hander, partially because they believed he would honor his commitment to the University of Texas instead of signing with an MLB team. As such, the White Sox had to pony up considerably more than the slot value for a 47th pick ($1.58 million). The 6-foot-2 Kelley pitched just 12 innings in his senior season at Refugio High School before the coronoavirus halted play, holding opponents without a hit while striking out 34 of the 36 batters he faced. As a junior, he had a 0.22 ERA and 144 strikeouts over 65 innings.
