Padres released 1B Jorge Cantu. It's basically a formality, as Cantu was designated for assignment by the club last week. The 29-year-old batted just .194/.232/.285 with three homers and 16 RBI over 155 plate appearances as a part-time player with the Padres. He has a measly .654 OPS over the past two seasons.
