On the advice of new Nationals pitching coach Mike Maddux, Gonzalez is altering his windup slightly to keep focus on his target, The Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gonzalez typically glances down as he begins his leg kick, but Maddux suggested he keep his eyes on the prize instead of looking away from the plate and having to pick the catcher's mitt back up. The results in Friday's Grapefruit League start were good (two scoreless innings, 17 of 27 pitches thrown for strikes) and given his career 3.85 BB/9 rate, any improvement in his control could pay big dividends for Gonzalez. Don't bump him up on your cheat sheets just yet, though.
