Nelson will miss the remainder of the season with a right rotator cuff strain and partial anterior labrum tear.
EDGE Analysis
This is brutal news for Nelson and the playoff hopeful Brewers. The 28-year-old injured his shoulder while sliding back to first base in Friday's 2-0 win over the Cubs, and while it's unclear if the issue will require surgery to repair, it will him sidelined until 2018 regardless. Nelson emerged as one of the better pitchers this season, compiling a solid 3.49 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 199 strikeouts -- all career-best numbers -- in 175.1 innings before injuring himself. His 10.2 K/9 was the fourth-best rate in the NL this season. He'll now turn his focus towards getting healthy and returning to the rotation as Milwaukee's ace next season.
