Murphy said he's considering retirement if he doesn't earn a spot on Boston's major league roster, WEEI.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Murphy has an opt-out clause that comes due Mar. 27 and it's awfully crowded situation in Boston's outfield. With Travis Shaw hitting his way into the team's plans for 2016, there doesn't appear to be room for a fifth outfielder. At this point in his career, Murphy said he has no interest in playing in the minors. "Retirement is definitely a possibility there," Murphy said. "I don't know. The way that everything has gone this offseason, something like that has crept up kind of quickly. It would definitely be part of my thought process, but I really don't know. I'd have to take a little bit of time to think about it, or to go home and stay in shape and wait for a phone call."
