Mike Leake didn't have his best stuff Tuesday, yielding 11 hits and three runs over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Padres.
Leake worked eight innings of one-run ball in each of his last two victories. So of course he lays an egg tonight against the worst offense in baseball. Leake didn't walk a batter, which is why he only gave up three runs, but San Diego treated him like a pitching machine. The right-hander had been gunning for a career-best fourth straight win. He whiffed four tonight. Reds manager Bryan Price believes Leake could increase his strikeout rate, but the club and pitcher are both content with his (previously) efficient approach for now. Now 6-7 with a 3.47 ERA, Leake gets the Cubs next week.
