Mets manager Terry Collins confirmed that Johan Santana (shoulder) is unlikely to pitch for the Mets before the end of the season.
Collins is "really excited" about Santana's progress, but the Mets are worried that the lefty could re-injure his shoulder if he gets amped up and tried to do too much in a start back in the big leagues. The plan for Santana going forward is up in the air depending on how the Mets' minor league affiliates fare in the playoffs. "He's (at the mercy) of the minor league schedule," Collins said. "...I'm hoping that either St. Lucie continues to win or Savannah gets in the finals to where we know that we'll have a scheduled game next week when he can pitch. If not, you'll probably see him here to pitch in a simulated game, if he's capable of doing so."
