McGowan was designated for assignment Thursday, MLB.com's Todd Zolecki reports. He was used in long relief Tuesday and gave up six runs on seven hits and two walks against the Orioles, essentially punching his ticket off the 40-man roster. Jake Diekman was recalled to take McGowan's spot in the Phillies' bullpen.
