Matz had a major-league debut to remember Sunday, giving up two runs on five hits and striking out six in 7.2 innings to get the win. At the plate, he went 3-for-3 with four RBI, a feat no other pitcher has ever done in his MLB debut in the last 100 years.
Matz picked up a tired bullpen, who went seven innings earlier Sunday, in the completion of Saturday's suspended game. He threw 110 pitches, his most of the season. Matz was 7-for-23 at the plate in Triple-A but no one could have imagined him being that good of a hitter Sunday. With the Mets using a six-man rotation, Matz's next start will come against LA next weekend.
