Matz (9-8) tossed 7.1 no-hit innings Sunday, walking two and striking out eight, before an Alexei Ramirez single broke up his bid and ended his day in a 5-1 win over the Padres.

He was at 105 pitches by that point, so manager Terry Collins was taking no chances with the lefty's workload. Matz has now delivered quality starts in six of eight outings since the beginning of July but has just a 2-5 record over that stretch thanks to the struggles of the Mets' offense, with both wins coming in starts when he held the opposition off the scoreboard entirely. He'll likely need to be stingy once again in his next start Friday on the road against Johnny Cueto and the Giants.
