Matt Carpenter (oblique) played nine innings in right field Wednesday night with Double-A Springfield. Carpenter went 0-for-4 at the plate, but that's not something that will bother the Cardinals. The utilityman appears likely to return to the major leagues in time for Friday evening's series-opener in Kansas City. He has been sidelined since late May with a strained right oblique.
