Matt Cain struggled in a losing effort against the Reds in Game 1 of the NLDS on Saturday, surrendering three runs on five hits over his five innings of work. Cain fanned four and walked one. He tossed just 75 pitches in the contest before being removed for a pinch-hitter in the fifth inning. All of the damage came via the long ball, with Brandon Phillips slugging a two-run homer in the third inning and Jay Bruce adding a solo shot in the fourth. It was the first time Cain had been scored upon in his postseason career, as he entered the night having tossed 21 1/3 innings straight shutout frames. With the limited pitch count, it's possible that the Giants could bring him back for a potential Game 4.
