Manager Ryne Sandberg said he would like to get Cesar Hernandez, who is the primary backup to Utley at second base, more playing time, the Phillies' official site reports. Utley, who was out of the lineup Sunday, is hitting just .182 with a .539 OPS in 244 plate appearances this season. He needs 256 more plate appearances for his $15 million option for 2016 to automatically vest. Utley is unlikely to lose his starting job outright, but it sounds like Hernandez will cut into his playing time until his offensive production picks up.
