Manager Pete Mackanin indicated that Odubel Herrera, Howie Kendrick, and Aaron Altherr are going to stay in the lineup if they keep hitting which leaves Saunders in a reserve role, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. "At this point, I've got to play those guys," Mackanin said. "It'll all even out. At some point, they will get a rest. If they keep swinging the bat, we're going to keep it going."
EDGE Analysis
The Phillies signed Saunders for $9 million prior to this season with the hopes of trading him before the July 31 deadline. That looks unlikely to happen at this point given his meager production. The team is likely to deal Kendrick at some point, but that figures to open up playing time for one of their outfield prospects to come up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. It is hard to see Saunders working his way back into a regular role, barring injury or a significant slump from one of the other outfielders on the roster.
