Manager Brad Ausmus confirmed Sunday that Avila (knee) would likely overtake James McCann for primary catching duties when he returns from the DL, MLive.com's James Schmehl reports. McCann has generally performed well in place of Avila the last several weeks, but Avila's veteran status and greater familiarity with the Tigers' pitching staff will likely weigh heavily in his favor. Expect the two catchers to employ a platoon in which Avila sees the larger share of at-bats, as McCann has posted a .308 average against lefties this season but just a .230 mark versus right-handers. Avila is expected to catch about five innings for Triple-A Toledo on Sunday and remain on assignment for the full week before possibly being activated next weekend.
