Lagares (thumb) has initially been diagnosed with a sprained left thumb and is heading to New York to be further examined by the Mets' doctors Monday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Lagares suffered the injury while making a diving catch Saturday, as his glove was bent with the thumb turned in. Monday's exam will give the team and Lagares a better sense as to the eextent of the injury and how long he will be sidelined. Alejandro De Aza will be the short-term beneficiary of Lagares' absence.
