Holliday, who will officially be placed on the 15-day DL on Saturday with a fractured right thumb, is scheduled to see a hand specialist Monday, at which point the Cardinals will determine whether he needs surgery, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.
EDGE Analysis
He was hit by a pitch in Thursday's game, suffering a broken thumb, and is out indefinitely while the team decides what the next course of action will be. If he needs surgery, he would likely miss most, if not all of the remainder of the season. If rest is prescribed, he could return sooner, although the thumb could still affect his productiveness at the plate. The Cardinals are rumored to be interested in bringing Carlos Gomez into the fold, which would signify that they are making plans to be without Holliday for an extended period of time. For now, Stephen Piscotty and Randal Grichuk will probably see the bulk of the time in the outfield corners, although Grichuk's time could be a little unpredictable, given the team's other options on the active roster.
