Holliday has been diagnosed with a fractured thumb, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

This is an exceptionally tough blow to a Cardinals team that is in the mix for a wild card spot. Holliday was struck on the hand by a pitch in Thursday's game and immediately left the field in pain. Jeremy Hazelbaker came on to pinch run for Holliday and he could see additional time in left field in Holliday's absence. However, Holliday's power from the right side of the plate will be sorely missed. MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch is reporting that Holliday will be placed on the disabled list, but the move has not been made official at this time.
