Hammel picked up a win in his first start of the season Saturday against the Rockies, yielding three runs on eight hits and no walks over six innings. He struck out six batters in the outing. Hammel had initially been scheduled to make his season debut Tuesday against the Cardinals, but a rain postponement ended up pushing him back to the weekend. It was probably a blessing in disguise for the Cubs, as the former Rockies hurler probably has more familiarity with pitching in Coors Field than anyone else on the staff, and that experience showed Saturday. While he was far from dominant, Hammel was able to generate timely strikeouts and limit the damage of the hits he did allow, as only two went for extra bases. Hammel won't have to contend with nearly as harsh pitching environments in his subsequent starts to come, making him a solid target in mid-sized or deeper leagues if he's still available on the wire.
