Evan Drellich of MLB.com was told by a source that the Red Sox plan to have a scout in attendance to watch Jake Peavy's start against the Tigers on Thursday. Peavy just returned from a rib fracture over the weekend, so the Red Sox want to get a sense of his health and effectiveness. Just when Clay Buchholz (neck, back) will return is an open question, so it's only natural that the Red Sox are considering Peavy as an option. With Matt Garza off the board, the veteran right-hander might be the best starting pitcher available leading up to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. The 32-year-old is under contract of $14.5 million next season while his contract includes a conditional $15 million player option for 2015.
