Dozier hit his 42nd home run of the season in Game 1 of the Twins' doubleheader Thursday against the Tigers. It was his 40th homer while playing second base, which set the American League single-season record, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

He's also only the fourth player in Major League Baseball history to reach the 40-dinger mark while manning the keystone, joining the illustrious company of Rogers Hornsby, Davey Johnson and Ryne Sandberg. Dozier's power hasn't been a question: He'd increased his seasonal big-fly total from 18 to 23 to 28 before this year's eye-popping numbers. His biggest 2017 riddle, however, will be sustaining his .281 batting average, which looks like an outlier.
