Cubs designated RHP Carlos Marmol for assignment. The Cubs were hoping to spin Marmol in a potential trade this summer, but that scenario has become less and less likely over time. The erratic right-hander has posted a 5.86 ERA and 21 walks in just 27 2/3 innings this season. Still owed about half of his $9.8 million salary, he'll almost certainly pass through waivers unclaimed.
